Re: yoga retreat type places
Mon, October 9, 2006 - 11:59 PMi am looking to find a place to work that focuses on yoga and meditation where people come for periods of time ranging from a few days to possibly a few months. i would love to live in the retreat center, ideally have room and board covered, and get paid to do whatever work was available. i could work in the kitchen, clean, do odd jobs...whatever. i'm not particularly trained in yoga or meditation so i don't think teaching would be an option as of yet. i just want to get into the lifestyle and i need to make money at whatever job i do (obviously...hence the point of a job...) and i would love to do it this way. do you need more explanation? -

Re: yoga retreat type places
Wed, October 18, 2006 - 7:05 AMWell, there's "Shambhala," en Play Zipolite, near Pochutla, Oaxaca. I'm not sure about making much money there, but it is a yoga retreat, and Gloria works out "work exchanges." Good Luck!!!

Wed, October 25, 2006 - 2:09 AMthat's good information. as far as how much you need to earn, do you have debts to pay or otherwise need a western/first-world salalry, or do you just need to make enough to have some simple pleasures? any part of the world you're more interested in than others, or climates you'e interested in? -

Re: yoga retreat type places
Sun, November 19, 2006 - 11:15 AMno, i have no debts or anything like that. money isn't important as long as i am happy and taken care of (ie, room and board). i would prefer a warmer climate but i'm not all that specific. i'm particularly interested in the mountain areas but not attached to that aspect. i would like to go abroad, but again not totally attached to that element either. -

Re: yoga retreat type places
Tue, December 5, 2006 - 4:07 AMyou know, allison, i'd personally just go about traveling as you like and when you are somewhere you'd like to call home for a while, find a job. there are retreat centers everywhere, and it is often easier to get a job when you are physically present...think of the employer's point of view when they get inquries from folks not actually there "yet"....
and without debts, you really can choose where you want to be.

Re: yoga retreat type places
Wed, November 15, 2006 - 12:15 AMThat all sounds about like what I'm looking for also. I would like a warm climate, room/board/food/classes in exchange for whatever work needs to be done. Money isn't important as long as my quality of life is high.

Re: yoga retreat type places
Sat, June 30, 2007 - 1:36 AMokay, i know you posted a while ago, but wanted to add a bit. Kalani is a great place on the Big Island to spend some time,.. a bit pricey to volunteer, but I feel, well worth it. I spent 6 months there a few years ago. Also another place on the Big Island to check out is Yoga Oasis, ===much smaller, calmer than Kalani, (only about 3 miles apart!)...
If you are thinking about overseas...I would recommend the Mana Retreat Center in New Zealand on the north island. small, accepts wwoofers, meaning you get room and board for free in exchange for 4-5 hours work/day...was a great, relaxing place, but not much in the way of classes, etc.
Although it's not tropical, may want to check out Omega Institute in New York (near Rhinebeck)...Accept volunteers and full-time staff do get small stipend in addtion to room adn board. A multitude of classes for FREE offered to staff from wide range of teachers..you get big names there...David Life and Sharon Ganno, Rodney Yee, Deepak Chopra, Carolyn Myss....can be big but is great opportunity to be exposed to those teachings without the big pricetag.
good luck!
