I realize this is a bit off topic for this tribe as it deals with teaching here, but I figured someone may have the info I am seeking.

I am interested in getting certified for teaching English oversees, but I would also like to be able to teach ESL here in the US if need be. I have asked numerous people and have tried searching the web for information on programs that certify you for both (or what additional things I'd need to also teach in the US), but I am having difficulty finding specific answers.. Some say certain TEFL programs will do that, others say that CELTA is the way to go, yet I haven't seen a program that offers this in either course.

Anyone have any insight on this???

thanks in advance.

Great question! I'm in the same situation but in Portland really the only short-term certification offered is the CELTA, so I'm probably going to go that route.

I'd love to hear what you find out though!

Where are you thinking of teaching abroad?

I'm not totally sure yet. We are considering the peace corps and who knows where we'll be placed if we take that route!! Or we may just head somewhere of our own chosing. In any case, I am learning more toward a spanish speaking environment. Right now, I am just in research mode to figure out our options/opportunities/preferences.

I Took it here in san francisco last spring and came from eugene oregon to take the week and certificate. I still don't have a job overseas and i had to bug the owner for a while who send me to contact his new assistant back in san diego. i think what i took was the TESOL but not sure. It originated from Canada. The owner of the school who now has school all over the country or almost, was telling me that i need to get on their butt so to speak because they owe me a job. for a lot of reason i didn't persue but i will in a few months.
If you need more infos, i can give you their email addy. some people went to teach in vietnam and middle east.
    Peace
    Vero
