Anyone have much experience with either of these aspects of "work" while travelling? Any places these things seem to go smoothly, any places you get a lot of hassle?

Thank you, Namaste...

  • Well, I know when I'm traveling, I appreciate non-locals selling their macrame and playing a panflute in the town square while I'm trying to experience and enjoy a different culture...
    • Ok, to be more specific:

I do make Macrame. I make peyote stitches and wire wraps. And I do not play a pan flute. I play songs about healing, love and spirituality. Thank you, I do understand your concerns regarding "westernization". that is not at all my intent. Rather, I hope to live as the locals do, and to learn from them. I am certainly not trying to offend anyone. If this is a serious concern, I would appreciate hearing comments on how I might avoid offense.
      • Where are you planning on travelling to and busking?

        cheers

        • Everywhere. I know thats not specific. To start with, either France or Central America. All throughout Europe, Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand, all over Asia (Specifically Thailand, China, Japan, India) Maybe through the Middle East, Russia, and, eventually, hopefully northern Africa, west coast, east coast, southern Africa. Just wondering if anyone has specific familiarity with any of these regions.

          Namaste,

          • Well in Australia I am pretty sure you have to have some kind of licence to busk especially if it is downtown Sydney and you have to rotate your space will others....... but it can be done...

I just saw a news clip on the tele about a knife swallower in Melbourne who has been stopped from performing. Something to do with the fact that knives are weapons that you are not allowed to carry in this country......

            She was not happy :/
            • this is something that i have been curious about as well and i would really appreciate any info anyone can give.

i will say that in Melbourne Australia you legally need a license to busk, but we have a thriving street performance sceen in this city and almost none of them bother with licenses. the authorities dont mind as long as there is no trouble so as long as you dont hassle or badger the passers by and you get on peacefully with the other street performers, and dont play music so loud that the shops complain, then things are usually fine. and of course as long as youre not doing anything illegal.

im strongly contemplating trying to make my way busking with Contact Juggling, juggling, fire etc when i go traveling later this year so if anyone with any experience of this anywhere around the world can shed some light that would be truly appreciated.

              thanks

  • I busked in Taiwan a few years ago, had no trouble...in fact, made some good money. However, they HAVE deported people for it. The unofficial line from a friend on the Taipei Police force is that they leave musicians alone, but they still have this pesky quota for deporting people for visa violations, and I can see that as being as easy mark (I was safe, I have permanent residency).

Never sold jewelry on the street, but have seen several people doing it. I really don't know how they did. However, here you DO have to be careful where you do it, for example in front of the zoo or in the middle of Hsinmentin, you probably WOULD be deported....the police regularly ticket the Chinese hawkers.
