i got a call from a cruise line and did an interview that seemed to go pretty well. they were looking at me for a cruise staff position (leading activities, etc.) but i told them i would need to give my job at least a month's notice. they called back later to ask me how i felt about being a librarian on board a cruise ship. i was not aware they had those but i looked it up and found it was an actual job they have on ships.

has anyone ever seen this on a ship? i'm curious about what i'm getting into with that. do you think i should take it, or stick to my guns about cruise staff?

There was a librarian and consequently a library on a cruise ship I went on once. Of course that was for the Shipboard University "Semester At Sea". Otherwise it doesn't seem all that unusual to me.

Well, I finished my contract as a librarian on a cruise ship. It was great. Let me know if you have any questions.

I would like working on a cruise ship--Don't know where or how to start looking. I would like to work with art--teach painting or work with art auctions--I know they have this kind of activities--could U give me a clue where to get started.

Be carefulness. My brother was offered a cruise ship job, and stopped by to tell me about it. He had to "buy some uniforms". I suggested that he look up the corporate number of the company and double check. It turned out to be a common scam. Good thing he checked before giving notice.

Uh, I already completed my contract. I did the job. It was not a scam. I worked as a librarian for Celebrity Cruises. I was not asked to buy any uniforms. They paid for my airfare and everything. Where was your brother looking to get a ship job?

He's a cook and replied to an ad in the local paper for a job based out of the Port of Jacksonville (Florida).

Hey, if anyone is interested, I'm thinking about volunteering to be an interpreter to travel across the world for 3 months. They have positions as English or Spanish teachers also. It's a non-paid position, but then they'll waive the fee to go on board.

I think it's a great way to travel the world and also gaining experience in teaching, as well as raising awareness in international politics.

This looks like a really interesting experience. Do you know anything about the program first hand? How hard it is to qualify for teaching positions? What the three months is like for participants?

            Thanks for this information!

I've never done this program, so I'm not sure what this will be like or how much work is involved. I applied for the position for the July voyage. Having an interview and also some tests (translation stuff) on the phone soon, so wish me luck!

They have different lectures and classes on board, and if you go as an English teacher, you'll probably have free time when the ship ports. The only thing is that it's a non-paid position because it's run by a Japanese non-profit organization, but then again, it's a great opporunity to see the world and network with similar minded people.
