Comunidades que estaban aisladas en el pasado se encuentran ahora en contacto diario con innumerables idiomas desconocidos. Se ha incrementado también la necesidad de aprender nuevos idiomas y de usar los mismos para establecer negocios internacionales, traducir más que antes (Sitios Web, Software, Documentos, Manuales, etc.). Se necesitan más lingüistas. Al mismo tiempo, se ha desarrollado una tendencia de fuerte competencia. Mientras que en el pasado un lingüista podía ofrecer sus servicios a su comunidad cercana de clientes, hoy en día un lingüista puede literalmente tener su domicilio en una isla en el Océano Pacífico y trabajar para clientes en Londres, Nueva York o Tokio.
