I'm applying for Doctor's without Borders, but in the chance that I do not get accepted, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a similar secular, humanitarian-aid, non-governmental organization that employs social workers ("mental health specialists").

I'm looking for a 9 month commitment or so (could be shorter, but I'll commit for that long).

Thanks in advanced!

Ok so I'm a Canadian, I am applying for the UK work holliday visa, plan to get there in August.
Will I have a problem if I get a one-way ticket? How much money should I have to prove I have enough for a ticket home and won't be a drain on them?
Anybody else here done this or have any advice?

What's it like teaching in the UK? I'm an experienced (3 years) certificated middle school teacher who has worked in both suburban and urban ELD environments. An agency from London called me - would it be worth it to go for 1 year. I also wonder how it would be to bring a family over (wife and teenage daughter).

Teaching English in Japan

Greetings and Smiles fellow tribers. I'm older (42) and without a degree, and have lived nomadic. I went on TEFL's .com and it says you have to have a university degree. Basically, I'm wondering if anyone has gone on to Teach English in Japan or other countries, who have lived off the grid, had very little money, etc., you get the drift. This just hit me, that I know I want to do this, and will do it any way I can, I've just come accross some hurdles concerning education background, finances, etc. I see some past threads I will read, but I thought I could maybe connect with others on this subject and hear your experiences.

Hey, so I was wondering if anyone out there is currently working in China, most specifically Shanghai? I'm looking for an English-teaching school that is reliable and decent to work for. I've already got my TEFL and some experience. Anyone having a good time in China? Do you mind talking a little bit about it? Thanks. :)

Teaching English without a BA

I am interested in living in other countries and teaching English when I have to as a way to keep alive. I've looked at the job board at Dave's ESL Cafe and noticed that quite a few of the positions posted require a bachelors degree on top of the certification. So obviously having a BA would help, but has anyone done it without one? I'm interested in pretty much anywhere outside of the U.S.

Thanks

Moving overseas.

Hi, folks! Looking for some advice.

What are some good, affordable shipping companies for moving overseas? I went to send a 3.6 lb package to a friend in Italy the other day and the USPS wanted $30! Dang! It's my intention to take 3 bags on the plane, plus carry on, paying for the extra bag. That will get most of my essentials over there, but I'm sure there will be some things I still want to keep that won't fit. I'm a reservist in the Navy, but since this isn't an active duty thing, I don't believe I can use military shipping options. I might be able to convince them to send my uniforms, though, since I'll still be drilling over there.

Ideas and recommendations? I see lots of companies on the web for this kind of thing, but personal recommendations would really help me sort through the chaos. Thanks!

i know this has probably been asked a gazillion times, but is it worth it? I live in SF and there is a school downtown that offers a part/time course, which is totally up my alley. A friend in spain (an american) said many of these schools are scams and he has heard nothing but bad things when the certificate-earners go to their prospective country of choice and teach english.

There is the SFSU MA option, but i don't want to invest two years.

Just to throw this in, i want to teach english in europe. Anyone have experience with teaching english in europe? How valid is the www.tefl.com website?

The jobs I have seen lately are either low paying or very highly demanding in the qualifications required. What good is having a choice between working in a restaurant or being a multi-certified Microsoft / Cisco / Sun / Tivoli / Veritas professional, if one pays to little to live on and the other is a "dream professional"? (multi-certified, multi-disciplined & experienced)

My current (and new) job is not going to pay enough to cover my basic household expenses! Its better than nothing for the time being but if I don't find something with more potential soon, my family will be no better off than the hurricane Katrina refugees!

I have skill, creativity, imagination and drive to offer. I am relatively young (39), have good work ethics (will not sit idle even if not assigned a task) and believe in delivering a good days work for a good days pay.

Can I get a job helping build bridges in Indonesia? Houses in Thailand? Hooking up computer networks in central London, or distributing relief supplies in central Africa? Does anyone have any ideas?

The "Amazing Race" television show reminds me how big a place the world is, so there has to be a place for everyone to make a contribution, right?!?

Thanks very much in advance. (words of encouragement also appreciated)

"I see in the near future a crisis approaching
that unnerves me and causes me to tremble
for the safety of my country. ...
Corporations have been enthroned
and an era of corruption in high places will follow,
and the money power of the country
will endeavor to prolong its reign
by working upon the prejudices of the people
until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands
and the Republic is destroyed.
I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety
of my country than ever before, even in the midst of war.
God grant that my suspicions may prove groundless."

Slightly OT: copy of birth certificate?

My dad is a naturalized American citizen. He was born in England. We're not on the best of terms, but I'd like to get a copy of his birth certificate, preferably without dealing with him directly (too much emotional b.s.). I'm considering pursuing the dual citizenship path so that I can get to Europe and stay there with a minimum of fuss.

Do you think a copy was filed at the place he got the naturalization certificate in the US? Does England have a system that would allow me to obtain a copy of it if I inquired through the correct, official channels? I have my birth certificate with his name on it. Might that be enough proof for a governing body to release a copy of his to me if I have his d.o.b. and all?

Thanks very much.

Hey I was just reading through the Financing your Travels thread over on the Practical Nomads Tribe (here if you haven't seen it)

http://practicalnomad.tribe.net/thread/7ba4318d-a30c-46df-84e6-a658ec1e32eb

and have a quick idea for people who want to make some easy money.

So I just started working at Google in the user interface department (I'm actually saving for a trek from Chile to Argentina in January, ping me if you have any suggestions!). My job is basically to look at how people interact with new products to figure out what we should change/tweak/dump. Right now my department is having a big problem, Google is making awesome new toys so fast that we can't find enough people to test them out. In fact, we're having so much trouble that we just bumped up pay rates for beta testers which now range from $250-$75 an hour (granted it's usually 75-100). Beta Testers typically visit an office in Silicon Valley, Seattle Area, Santa Monica, or NYC but I think there are also offices in london, beijing and hyderabad that do some testing.

Here's the cool thing, we also do tests that are ONLINE so you can sign up from anywhere, perfect for the practical nomad:) I'm pretty sure that the range for online tests is a little bit lower, $40-$200 per study but I've traveled in Asia, India, Africa, Europe, and South America and I know that even $40 extra dollars is enough to keep people from going back to the cube/suit/whatever for at least a few days.

Here's how it works, follow the link, sign up and someone from google will contact you if you fit the criteria for a study.

https://survey.google.com/wix/p0822776.aspx?referral_code=TR2

and I'm not trying to spam this forum, I've been a strong member of tribe since 04 and I love the community here. This is definitely an insider opportunity and I'd be happy to know that it went to someone living out the kind of international adventures we all live for :)

also, if you meet somebody who needs cash you can just tell them to go to

google.com/usability

(easy to remember!) and ask them to mention that they heard about it from tribe (there's a little box in the survey). You're also welcome to email this to lists or post in other forums if it's relevant or you think people would be into the idea. I created a referral code (TR2) but it doesn't really matter as long as you mention tribe.

So that's the deal, if you have any questions you can message me. In general we're looking for people over 18 who aren't programmers or ui designers.

Cheers and Safe Travels!

I'm busting my ass to try and get out of the US to Manila, Philippines sometime around July 15. I've got a Bachelor's Degree and I'm working on an ESL Certificate that I should have nailed down by the end of March. Any recommendations be it teaching English, training English at call centers or a general job opening for someone moving from the US would be much appreciated.
ESL certification abroad... To be or not to be?

I've heard you can teach abroad with or without a certificate, but I wanted to hear what you think. From reading job postings on-line I've seen a salary difference between certified teachers and uncertified, but does this change after an uncertified instructor gains experience, good references, etc? Is the job market more competative for the uncertified?

I'm looking into the CELTA - it seems to run on average ~ $1500 USD, with 4 weeks of studying 40 hours/ week, but... Is it worth it? That's a pretty good chunk of time/money, but seemingly worth it if the education is of high quality, you earn more $, and most seem to offer job placement.

Anybody know about language schools (Canturbury English for example?) who are cheaper and less intensive than CELTA programs, how are these certificates looked at by potential employers?

I've taught adult ESL part time for one year, mostly simple conversation and phonics. I loved it but want to gain more skills and grow as an educator, while also enjoying traveling and living internationally. I was thinking of beginning my persuits in Thailand, though there are so many amazing places to go! If anyone could offer their comments, experiences, or whatevers I'd much appreciate.

I work in a great school with 3 ESL teachers and 9 very nice Korean teachers. The boss is really nice and it's generally a very calm, cool place to work, it's about 40 mins from Seoul and we need a new teacher to start in March.
The only job requirement is a batchelor degree in any subject and of course that English is your first language. The kids are aged 5-12 and teaching hours can be anything between 9.30am and 7pm - 110 hours per month is the max. Salary 1.9m won per month (approx $2000 or GBP 1,100 per month)
Please email me if you're interested and can be here by March 1st: suzysue101@hotmail.com

Getting a job overseas is not a child's play. Generally due to skill shortage a country allows foreign workers to work in their industries. Every year all countries publish skill shortage list.
You will find lots of overseas opportunities on net, but a small number will offer work permit. If you are searching for a genuine and authentic resources for work permit, then you can see www.job-quest.net where each and every job carries a valid work permit sponsorship from employer. Check it out

Fly Fiji- The UltraLight FloatPlain DVD ~Elegant Integrity~

So, as I am currently unable to get my altitude adjustment due to location here in Southern Oregon...I have resorted to living the dream of flight vicariously through the video footage I have compiled over the last four years of flying over the incredibly gorgeous reefs of the SouthPacific. Fiji to be exact. We are Part-time, seasonal residents of the country ands have been hard at work building a house and setting ourselves up to do some groundbreaking flights in my brothers M2 Sprint with Full-Lotus Floats. With his BFI in hand, we are free to fly and Film some of the most amazing land and sea-scapes this planet has to offer. I have spent the last summer working on the production of the FlyFiji Movie...Elegant Integrity. A half hour long DVD full of incredibly grand views, a bit of surfing(Fly-Surfing, actually), Photo Slideshow, and smooth soundtrack. Trying to describe the view above a coral reef paradise to someone who hasn't seen it, is like trying to explain a moving sunset to a blindman...Even an accomplished poet would be hesitant!
~All you have to do is contact me through this here Tribe~net, and you can share in the experience of gliding over the reefs of the tropical SouthPacific ....
As always, Its our point of view that determines our fate~
Blessings,
Jahvan

Spanish Nationality - Update

The laws were changed in 2003 to allow people who have a Spanish Grandparent (before it was parent only) to easier obtain a residency and work permit. After only ONE YEAR of residency, you can then apply for your Spanish Nationality. You can keep your current citizenship, as long as it is from a Latin American Country, but NOT with the U.S. I wonder what can one do, although I heard that the law here has been modified to allow U.S. Citizens to keep their nationality. Anybody knows anything about this?

a musician leaping over the pond?

Hey folks:

I'm starting to consider the idea of packing up my act and taking it to Europe.

I've been on tour there four times. I'm a conscious Rap artist/musician who performed with one of the very first live Hip Hop bands in 1995. The only other group doing the same thing at the time was the Roots. European audiences appreciated what we had to offer sooooo much more than Americans did. We didn't want to come home (although we were all stricken with the strangest feelings of **gasp** "nationalism" when we landed and looked up at the flag).

But things have changed here. My sound and message are very unique and that's not playing well on this side of the pond, what with all the "laffy taffy" and "candy shop" bullshit prevalent on mainstream urban contemporary radio. It's been said that it's easier to break a new Hip Hop act in GERMANY of all places, than it is in the US. Having been there, I can understand why that is. Furthermore, the jobs (in the administrative realm) that I USED to be able to get to support me while I pursued my real love have largely been outsourced to India, and I vehemently disagree with the overall direction this country is going in.

Given these factors, I am thinking about what might be involved with packing up and relocating to Europe. It's my impression that Germany is extremely expensive and perhaps not the best option. Britain and France, not as much either. But a tribe member said that Spain could be a reasonable alternative.

Spain appears lovely to me- I've always wanted to go there and I can get by with the language. Does anyone have any perspective to offer on what a US musician (with really comprehensive and marketable administrative skills) might be looking at in terms of finding a place to live and pursue his life's work somewhere in Europe?

Animal Healing in New Zealand

A little bird told me that Animal Acupressure Massage and healing work is pretty popular in Australia and New Zealand. Is this true? I will soon be trained in Animal Acupressure and my compass is pointing me toward New Zealand. It will be exponentially simpler to gain residency if I can find a position utilizing my animal experience and soon-to-be-earned certification. Any ideas or suggestions?

I have also searched the U.S. for a place to call home that is harmonious with my beliefs, values and dreams. I have become increasingly discouraged. The more I search, the more I realize that I like the idea of creating the life of my dreams elsewhere and leaving this mess behind! I am seeking lifestyle and harmony, not money. If the basics are taken care of and my fiance and I are relatively comfortable, that is all I need. We have only 1 cat and no children. We are both starting out own business so are able to be self-employed.

I looking forward to hearing from you!

I worked in Vancouver for my working holiday visa a couple of years ago (am a legal secretary of 12 years experience). The only thing I can think of is learning French and immigrating via the points system without an employer sponsoring me (and saving a lot of moula).

need job NOW in SE Asia, Japan, India, Nepal, Taiwan, Aus, NZ

any one got any tips or links for me?

been travelling for the past 6 mos in Thailand, Nepal, and India. headed back to Bangkok soon (March 9 from Calcutta) which is sort of my new 'base of operations' as I have a free, nice place to stay there.

anyway.... I'm soon to be broke as a joke and I've gotta get a JOB! ACCHHHHH!!!

so yeah, any tips or advice or especially specific links to jobs would be wonderful. I'm looking to teach english or even work in a restaurant or store or cruise ship or maybe even at a national park or something like that... I'm open to lots of jobs, but one thing I definitely DON'T want to do is pick fruit... that one isn't for me.

my preferences would be Japan, Thailand, Nepal, possibly Taiwan or Korea, with second choice down in NZ or Australia.

the quandary..

i'm trying to work out this strategy, and wondering if anyone has any thoughts/experience related to it:

i'm in the us right now, near boston, and looking to leave here late autumn. want to be in korea by december or sooner, staying anywhere from 1-3 months. also want to be in jakarta for a few days or more, and extended time in thailand and india. i'd like to return to the u.s. in the spring.

i'm thinking cruise ship, because i'd rather make money than spend money to get across, and i'd rather take two weeks and less fuel than twenty hours and henious amounts of fuel (i'm really trying to not use airplanes, but they are so damn convenient).

i want to offer reiki treaments and teach yoga.

soo...here are some questions:
1. if you sign with a cruise ship, do you have to fulfill the contract all at once or can you do part now, part then?
2. do you know of any boats (one or a combination maybe) that could get me across the big waters and then hop me around the little waters?
3. would it be best to go boston across the atlantic, and then is there something from eu to east asia, or would it be better to go west coast us and go across the pacific?

hmmm...
your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Looking for Locations for Kundalini Dance Workshops

Ekstatic Dance/Kundalini Dance Offered Worldwide

I am interested in finding locales that would be suited towards recieving a unique dance journey through the chakra's for healing and empowerment. Combining electronic dance music with a chakra dance system designed by Antara Decker (www.kundalini-dance.com)her student Luna Ravenchild is the sole facilitator of Kundalini Dance in this form in North America. It has a strong following in the Vancouver and Sunshine Coast area where Luna is based. She is joined by her loving partner Dj Solus who also does sound healing.

If anyone has leads on community centers, yoga studio's, retreat centers, warehouse spaces with dance collectives, funky places, Burner friendly zones, SPAZ's (semi-permanant automous zones)..please contact me so i can hook it up. As promoter for Ekstasis Dance I am interested in accompanying these journeys throughout the world and sharing in the experience with as many people as possible. Dancing intentionally with other people is my greatest love in life.

I also facilitate workshops when i can and am able to offer a range of workshops connected especially to youth and arts empowerment on issues of any sort. I am interested in networking globally with eco-villages, intentional communities and networks that are interested in tribal dance culture movement.

i got a call from a cruise line and did an interview that seemed to go pretty well. they were looking at me for a cruise staff position (leading activities, etc.) but i told them i would need to give my job at least a month's notice. they called back later to ask me how i felt about being a librarian on board a cruise ship. i was not aware they had those but i looked it up and found it was an actual job they have on ships.

has anyone ever seen this on a ship? i'm curious about what i'm getting into with that. do you think i should take it, or stick to my guns about cruise staff?

Working in Spain

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could make some money in Spain in order to stay there for at least a year. I've tried the Au Pair thing in France and I'm not about to do that again. I speak fluent French and a little Spanish but not really enough to carry on much of a conversation. I was hoping to be able to go to Spain (I like Granada) to learn Flamenco and Spanish. I can't really think of any jobs besides teaching English that I could do without being fluent in Spanish. I know some people are much more resourceful than I am when it comes to these sorts of things. I've thought about just going without any plans on how I could afford to stay although it is against my better judgement. There's no real way for me to save a significant amount of money though because I either have to keep going to school or pay my student loan. I know it can be done because I've met people on my travels that seem to make due with nothing while travelling the world. I know the cheesy saying 'where there's a will there's a way' and I've got the 'will,' I'm just looking for the 'way.'

why teaching? why ESL? just a question

Hi all, new to this tribe. just been workin in Namibia for the past 4 years and some of that time i taught english- for the pay check... and I looked on this tribe- Almost all the posts are about teaching English. My career isn't in English Teaching but it seems (aside from my actual career which can only be done abroad) for short term work assignments (6mo-1year--2 yrs...) its all ESL and Tefel.

So for all those doing that- Why? do you like it? how do you feel about it? I really want to go to Thailand for a few months next year but the only jobs are teaching English. Not a big fan of the idea. just curious what people think about it.

(don't look at my post for gramatical errors please! lol.)
certification for teaching overseas & US

I realize this is a bit off topic for this tribe as it deals with teaching here, but I figured someone may have the info I am seeking.

I am interested in getting certified for teaching English oversees, but I would also like to be able to teach ESL here in the US if need be. I have asked numerous people and have tried searching the web for information on programs that certify you for both (or what additional things I'd need to also teach in the US), but I am having difficulty finding specific answers.. Some say certain TEFL programs will do that, others say that CELTA is the way to go, yet I haven't seen a program that offers this in either course.

Anyone have any insight on this???

thanks in advance.

help! need an employee?

Hi all,
I thought I was on my way to Japan in pretty soon here, but my future employer just changed her plans. And I don't really want to change mine, so I'm now beginning the search for a job (I'm open to many other countries besides Japan, though). Just thought I'd throw out a random request for work in case you or someone you know needs to hire an incredibly hard-working, easy-going, fun-loving, quick learner. I'm a writer, so I'm willing to do pretty much anything minus sex and murder if it allows me to pay the bills and gives me a couple of free hours a day to create. Over the past ten years, I've been a bartender, a restaurant manager, a scuba diver, a medical researcher, and a political analyst/newspaper columnist. I'm happy to provide a resume, references, and answers to your questions once you ask! Any advice is welcome at this point. Thank you thank you!

useful job sites for esl

Useful E.F.L links

www.eslcafe.com/jobs

Dave's ESL Cafe. Probably the best site going. Good for teaching ideas, advice etc. Go to the employment page, you can also post a request for information about a particular school or country, as well as a request for employment in a particular destination.

www.teflfarm.com

A very good web-site good. Full of teaching ideas, lesson plans, etc. Type 'employment' in the search option, you'll then be given a list of top employment sites .

http://tefl.com/jobs/search

Equal to Dave’s ESL for employment.

www.linguistic-funland.com

Take a trip to linguistic funland.com. Good for employment and ideas
Look at The Guardian on-line each Tuesday

(www.educationunlimited.co.uk/tefl ) and the Times Educational Supplement
(www.times.com).

The Guardian Web-Site is probably the better of the two.
All the information you need about jobs, teaching ideas, full lesson plans etc. can be found on the web sites above.

Does anyone know of any countries or legitimate companies that hire English teachers with a TEFL certificate, but without a BA/BS. Additionally, can anyone recommend a legitimate TEFL certification program at a reasonably fair rate. I'm going to Thailand in January and am considering just staying in Southeast Asia for 6 months to a year if I can find a teaching job without a degree... I want to get certified online, but I don't know if I trust all the ads. I've taught dance for many years and have taught myslef three foreign languages... I'm hoping that will count for something on my resume... any advice?????

35 tips for the esl teacher/entertainer

1. Prepare your material thoroughly.
2. Don’t assume anything (“Has anyone got a whiteboard pen ?”)
3. Arrive on time for your lessons.
4. Be yourself.
5. Organise your material before the lesson starts.
6. Be prepared to adapt, not just blindly follow
your plan.
7. Be enthusiastic.
8. Get to know your students names quickly and
use them whenever possible.
9. Don’t panic.
10. Encourage continually,but don’t over-do it.
11. Seek help and advice from experienced colleagues.
12. Make your descriptions and explanations as visual as possible.
13. Don’t talk unless you need to(“I’m going to walk to the board now”)
14. Pace yourself.
15. Don’t interrupt student activities,it is their talking time.
16. Plan your explanations, just because you understand an activity it doesn’t mean you
can tell someone how to do it.
17. Never criticize your students.
18. Students bring a wealth of experience to the classroom, use it whenever you can.
19. Plan your boardwork, take care what you put on it.
20. Vary the stimulus as often as possible.
21. Self evaluate your lessons, critically note down what works and what doesn’t.
22. Seek evaluations from your students, they are the best judges of your teaching.
23. Make sure you know the operating procedures for all equipment.
24. Don’t talk to the board.
25. Always try to open and close your lessons in a positive way(“Right, bye then !”)
26. Demonstrate visually rather than verbally.
27. Always give one copy of activity material between two, even readings.
28. Monitor unobtrusively and continually during activities, note errors, don’t interrupt.
29. Don’t over or under correct.
30. Keep an eye on timings, adapt if needed.
31. Involve all students equally in your lessons.
32. Structure your activities and their explanations.
33. Practice rewinding tapes before the lesson.
34. Use reference material as a guide,not a bible.
35. Have fun!

Teaching English Overseas

I'm simply looking for comprehensive information on this. Are there web sites I should be looking at? Books? People I can talk to?

I know many programs want you to have a bachelor’s degree, and its recommended, but others say they don’t. Is there a difference in jobs/locals/whatever that you would get in these kinds of programs? Does it matter if your degree was earned through distance learning? Will they check that and reject you on that basis, or do they just want to know you were competent enough to get one? I was looking at the TEFL site, and they don’t mention needing a degree, only the certificate they give, is that certificate somehow better?

For that matter, what does it take to get overseas, aside from money and a passport? What kinds of problems can you run into getting these things? What resources can help?

If you get hired, are things like shots (for the international travel thing) and travel expenses paid by the school, or do you have to cover it yourself?

And, um, what about culture shock? I've been reading how even the heartiest traveler can be sideswiped by this, and I had a friend it drove to the brink of suicide just from the feeling of sheer isolation (she taught in China).

*L* And so on.

I know its a lot of questions, but I'd just be happy to be pointed to a few really good internet links, though talking to people who tried it would be wonderful.

I saw the topic posted on Cheap International Airfare and thought I'd see if this group had any info - a website, a contact name, a phone #, anything specific and legit to get us started w/ the Courier gig? This type of job sounds really intriguing. Any info. is appreciated.

Question for those who work overseas

Working overseas is something I've been considering since I am very interested in traveling and rarely have the money to do so.

Does anyone work overseas for a period of weeks or months and go back to the SAME home you left? In other words, I would like to keep my apartment (pay rent, etc) and come back to it when my assignment is up. I dont like the idea of coming home to no home. Thought I can put my thinks in storage, I'd rather have my apt as well. My credit sucks and its hard enough to get a place as it it.

Thoughts?

Does anyone have experience teaching ESL abroad? I have had many friends do this in Korea and have had mixed experiences (from the very good to the very horrible). Some people have returned which quite a bit of money, others have been ripped off.

Any thoughts, comments? Also, has anyone tought ESL in Europe or South America?

In Latin America, hundreds of thousands of young people desperate to learn ESL, along with basic computer and people skills, many of the public and private institutions now pretending to teach "English" are filled with native teachers who are far from qualified to teach the basics and schools often take student's money for onthe using "gimmicks" and relying on grammar exercises and workbooks. The pay is low by North American standards and hours are usually staggered since students often work or study at university or colegios (high schools) by day. Seeking highly motivated "freelancers" with or without "TOEFL" or "Certification", English native speakers, proactive interested in setting up their OWN institutes and making a good profit while offering the best services around..a challange if you're willing to accept it..but not "Mission Impossible"

Teaching English in Eastern Europe

I would like to hear from anyone who has experience teaching English in Eastern Europe. I am particularly interested in Prague, but I know it might be very competitive there, so I'm willing to consider other places as well (I've heard Bulgaria is nice).

I do not have a TEFL/TESOL certificate, but I have an M.A. in history and many years of college teaching experience--mostly history (medieval and early modern Europe), but also a freshman English composition course. I have also done some private (one-on-one) ESL tutoring. Would I still need to get a certificate? I do not know any other languages besides some rusty French.

I am hoping to start this fall, for the upcoming academic year, but I don't know if it's too late already. Also, I am concerned about money--I am not expecting to come home with any money, but I would at least like to break even and be able to cover my living expenses and travel. I know that Asia pays better but I have a deep interest in European history and would really like to go there.

a friend of mine, who is swedish, invited me to stay with him in south sweden this summer. however, if i went i would have to work. he said he would help me find a job, and everything seemed like it would work out.

but now i have found that i would have to wait about 6 weeks before i could work to get a work permit, and that's only if i get a job offer from a potential employer.

i was only planning to live and work there this summer, and i would only be there for about 2 months, so that situation completely rules out the plans i had.

does anyone know of a way around this?

If all else fails make contacts and travel somewhere and volunteer for a while, even 2 weeks or so, so people get to know you face to face.....an e mail from a "job seeker" is deleted in a heartbeat, a real live face and a smile to go with it well....

http://www.travelblog.org/Central-America-Caribbean/El-Salvador/blog-2400.html some advices from Women already "there" on this Bloq

Sorry ----- cannot obtain anyone from the States a "job" abroad. Best try Monster.com International and as well join migente.com for Latinos living mostly in the US and Canada with lots of clubs and forums and a section to post your resume, the site is in English.
I am looking for someone who is willing and able to come to Central America as a small investor (about $5,000), obtain their business residency and set up a language learning, arts and crafts, cultural center and cross cultural institute focused on sustainable and responsible receptive tourism. Seeking only self starters, TEAM PLAYERS, proactive, with a mission and a vision. The businesses in partnership with natives. Level of Spanish (basic required), Degrees, Certificates, CVs and "paper references" not important, people work, resumes do not! Volunteers are always welcome from a few days to a month or so, but should pay their room and board, which is not much by North American standards, rice and beans, arroz y frijoles, are very nutritious and you can learn to wash your own clothes in the "pila" as well.
As well, the old timers like myself, who have been living offshore awhile have an old steadfast rule (I resided in Latin America before there were even public faxes!) We never finalize business with someone we do not know until we have looked them in the eye, shook their hand, studied their "body language" and see how they deal with stress of culture shock and relocation. If your "M" is can you get ME a job you have contacted the wrong person. Best Regards and Good Luck."

Live Abroad or Going to live Abroad? Relocating? Need Help?

Reps required worldwide....

We value our reputation more than a quick "real estate
commision" or "selling a tour"

Already residing abroad..resident and bilingual?

*We invite Ex Pats residing anywhere and everywhere to
work with "The Polyglots International" in helping
others who wish to do business, invest, retire,
relocate or travel in your country. You need be either
a native of your country or a legal resident, fluent
in the language(s) spoken there and familiar with
customs and culture. Just moving from one home to
another "across town" or to another city in your own
country is STRESSFUL enough, relocating to a strange
land triples or quadruples this "stress factor",
especially when the newcomer neither speaks nor
understands the language of the new country and has no
contacts, neither friends there.....

Travelling abroad for business and need contacts, consultancy and translation services?

*International Multilingual Business Help and
Consultancy
Ayuda y asesoría multilingüe en negocios
internacionales
Mehrsprachige internationale Geschäftshilfe und
Beratung

Need to learn a new language?

*Language Courses, Translation, Multilingual
Publishing, Mehrsprachige Veröffentlichung
Translators, Sprachen, Übersetzung, Idiomas,
Traducción, Langues, Traduction
Traductores, Anything about languages... Todo lo
relacionado a idiomas...
International multilingual business help!

We try to ease the
transition..cross-cultural coaching and
orientation...our associates and reps introduce you
around to natives and ex-
pats alike..show you around the area, and most
important..

******* insider information on such important
things as real estate purchases or rentals, shopping,
infrastructure and internet connectivity, schools,
public safety.

Avoid those internet "investment and real
estate CONS"...for example a member of ours went to
Costa Rica some 18 months ago and was charged $200 a
day for a "Real Estate" tour and was put into a $200
per night hotel, 3 star billed as 5 star since she and
her husband were told there were "no other" lodgings
available..had I been with her then I would have been
able to book them into a nearby 3 star B & B for $50 per
night and our Real Estate-Relocation tour fee for
members, set by our local rep, a bilingual dual citizen native, is less than half
the price the couple paid for their tour.
We are able handle all
translation work and consultancy regarding residence overseas
for either business or retirement purposes, cutting red tape
and making your transition a treat instead of a
nightmare!

Send us a PM if interested and we can
arrange a friendly chat session sometime in the future.

Regards, The Polyglots International.

Along with membership in our organization, which costs
less than a dinner for two in any decent 3 star
establishment in Western Europe or North America we
offer linguistic services, language study and many other benefits and services.

Teachers of languages, translators and simultaneous
interpreters we have work galore worldwide for our
members.
